It really sucks to think about how easily you can get fired from your job after spending the time, energy and anxiety to finally get the damn thing. It sucks even more if you were fired because of overly sensitive people like this sports anchor’s viewers.
Dan Phillips is a newscaster out of Nashville, Tennessee when he recently was covering the nightly news as per usual. And with the death of Prince being the headline on every major network and website, Phillips decided to spin his sports segment into a tribute to the late pop singer. Viewers however felt that Phillips tribute was actually insensitive, called in to complain and eventually got Phillips fired from his job. No warning, no probation, straight up fired.
Take a look out how super insensitive Phillips’ tribute really wasn’t.
How dare he reference Prince songs that have played on the radio for the past 30 years. Our children’s ears! Although it’s unclear if viewers thought the broadcast was insensitive, a little risque because people like to stereotype performers OR they just aren’t Prince fans and think he doesn’t mix well with sports…even though Prince was an athlete and one helluva basketball player.
Regardless, the station fired this poor guy without warning. The real shitty part is what he did isn’t at all uncommon, especially for sports anchors. Check out THIS sports anchor’s tribute after Robin Williams had died. Yet this dude still has a job.
So this tribute was okay but Dan Phillips‘ wasn’t?
Phillips commented on his firing via Facebook. Luckily it reads like he’s keeping his chin up despite how annoying the situation is. “First of all, I want to thank everyone for the kind words, comments and positive feedback on this tribute I did to Prince last week. It really means a lot. Unfortunately, there were apparently some viewers, as well as management at the station, who did not feel the same way. They felt I was insensitive. And as a result, I was terminated today. I’m choosing to use this as a catalyst for some exciting things I’ve been working on for some time now. I’ll have many more details on this in coming days. For now, thanks again for all of your support. And if you need an old, washed-up sports guy for anything, please let me know!” From the looks of his Facebook page, he’s got two little boys that now get to see dad stress over looking for work, if not possibly uproot the whole family to find it.
It’s not uncommon however to be fired for the dumbest fucking reasons it turns out. Here are some other poor souls who got canned for pretty much doing nothing wrong.
1. A waiter got fired for thanking a customer for his tip.
According to the waiter’s story, they had a pleasant interaction with the customer throughout their visit. The customer even told them that they don’t normally go above a 10% tip but since they enjoyed the service, they were going to leave a 15% tip. The waiter thanked them and moved along. Later, management informed them that the customer complained about the server’s reaction to the tip and had to suspend the server while they investigated. Days later, HR called to inform them they were fired because their rule book states that a server must not react with anything other than a “thank you” when it comes to the tip and that the woman seemed to have no reason to lie about it.
2. A lifeguard was fired for jumping in the water.
As the lifeguard tells the story, they worked a pool at a community center and were allowed to jump in the pool to cool off for just a second. So, it being a hot as hell day with really no patrons around, the lifeguard jumped in the pool to cool off. After getting out of the pool, their boss yelled at them for jumping in the pool. The lifeguard said it was just for a second but the boss said they timed them and it was 60 seconds. He then asked the lifeguard to get their things and leave.
3. A steelworker was fired for missing work to go to his brother’s funeral.
The steelworker states that management pointed out that employees are only allowed to miss work for “parents, spouses and children only”. Fuck THAT job.
4. A salesman was fired for plummeting sales…while they were home sick with bronchitis.
According to the employee, they were out for a week and a half with bronchitis. Y’know, something your other co-workers would just LOVE to have around. Upon their return, their manager asked to see them to discuss how their sales had plummeted during that time…and how the company just can’t stand by that.
5. An employee was fired because another employee wrote their name on the schedule to get out of a shift.
This story comes from an employee of a dog kennel who had a co-worker who wanted time off. No one agreed to exchange hours so the employee apparently went ahead and erased their name from the schedule and wrote in another name. No one showed up for that shift, so management called in the person whose name was now on that block and asked why they hadn’t come in. They explained what probably happened and even showed a copy of the schedule before the change. They didn’t believe them and fired them.
