After Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck announced last summer that they were divorcing after 10 years of marriage, the two have remained mostly mum about their devastating split. Instead, Ben and Jennifer have been handling their breakup amicably—focusing on putting their three kids together first. So it was surprising when, months later, Jennifer did a revealing interview with Vanity Fair that opened up about everything from her thoughts on the rumors that Ben had been seeing the family’s nanny (“She had nothing to do with our decision to divorce,” Jen says.) to what she really thinks of his new Phoenix tattoo (“Bless his heart.”). And now it seems that Jennifer’s openness has prompted Ben to finally speak about their split too.
In a new interview with The New York Times, Ben addresses why he’s been reluctant to open up about the divorce before: the sake of his children. “It ends up being in the record somewhere, in the great miasma of junk on the Internet,” he explains.
So why was Jennifer willing to open up to Vanity Fair? “She felt like she wanted to discuss it and get it out there and get it over with,” he says. “So she could say, ‘Look, I already talked about it—I don’t want to do it again.’ It’s fine. She’s allowed to talk about it.”
And he also makes it clear that there are no hard feelings between them, even adding that Jennifer and the kids are planning to visit him during the filming of Justice League so they can vacation as a family. “Jen’s great,” he says. “She’s a great person. We’re on great terms. I just saw her this morning, so that’s the reality that I live in.”
