'Despicable Me 3' Gets 'South Park' Creator as the Villain

Day 3 of CinemaCon closed out with Universal Pictures’ two-hour presentation, which, like the studios before them, included plenty of news about their upcoming slate. The studio announced during their presentation that South Park co-creator Trey Parker has come aboard to voice the new villain in their upcoming animated sequel Despicable Me 3. It was also announced that Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2 star Steve Carell will return as Gru, but he will also be voicing a brand new character.

The studio revealed that Steve Carell will also be voicing Drew, Gru’s long-lost identical twin brother, who looks just like Gru, except for a full head of blond hair. Trey Parker will be voicing Balthazar Bratt, a former child star from the 1980s who is obsessed with the character he once played, and becomes Gru’s new nemesis. It hasn’t been confirmed if any of the other Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2 voice cast members, such as Miranda Cosgrove, Kristen Wiig, and Benjamin Bratt, will be returning for this animated follow-up.

No further plot details were revealed for Despicable Me 3, but Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda, who directed Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2, are returning to the helm. They will be joined by co-director Eric Guilon, with Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio writing the script. It isn’t known when we may see the first look at Despicable Me 3, so stay tuned.

Universal has already issued a June 30, 2017 release date for the animated sequel, which will go up against Warner Bros. The House and Sony’s Uncharted. Hopefully the studio will start announcing more cast members in the near future, but we’ll be sure to keep you posted with the latest updates on Despicable Me 3. The first two movies were huge hits at the box office, with Despicable Me taking in $543.1 million worldwide from a $69 million budget, and Despicable Me 2 earning $970.7 million worldwide from a $76 million budget.

Trey Parker is best known for co-creating South Park with Matt Stone, and providing several voices for the hit series, such as Cartman, Stan and Randy. The show is entering its 20th Season on Comedy Central this year. He also co-created the hit Broadway play The Book of Mormon alongside Matt Stone. What do you think about Trey Parker voicing the villain in Despicable Me 3?

Despicable Me 3 comes to theaters June 30th, 2017.
