Disney Fans Want Frozen 2 to Give Elsa a Girlfriend

Yesterday, GLAAD (the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Discrimination) called out Disney for not including LGBT characters in any of the studio’s movies over the past year. The organization went onto state that they’d very much like to see director Rian Johnson introduce at least one gay character in Star Wars: Episode VIII. Now, fans have jumped on this bandwagon. Only they’re not so interested in seeing Poe Dameron and former Stormtrooper Finn hook-up. They’d rather see Disney give Elsa a girlfriend in Frozen 2.

Frozen fans have flooded social media with the hashtag #GiveElsaaGirlfriend, which has started trending on Twitter and Facebook. Frozen is the highest-grossing animated movie of all time. Since its release in 2013, it has been heralded for its progressive nature. The movie abandoned the old romantic prince-saves-princess plot line for a story that revolves around the love had between two sisters. Now, fans are demanding that Disney take it a step further and break down more gender norms, according to Time.

These fans believe a first step in the right direction would be to declare Elsa gay, setting her up as a role model for LGBT children. The fairy tale musical is currently in production, and since it is animated, it could be very difficult for Disney to set their sequel on this course if they are not already planning to give Elsa a girlfriend. The original movie’s Academy Award-winning theme song ‘Let it Go’ has been adopted by the LGBT community as an anthem.

This social media movement was a direct response to Walt Disney Studio’s flunking the annual GLAAD Studio Responsibility Index. It was set forth to measure how the LGBT community is reflected in TV and movies. Disney released 12 major motion pictures in 2015, including new installments of Star Wars and Marvel, none of which included any gay characters of any kind, whether they be minor or major roles. Paramount also came under fire for not having any LGBT characters in their release slate from the past year. GLAAD had their eye more firmly planted on Disney, though. Here’s what they said in their initial release.

“Of all the studios tracked in this report, Walt Disney Studios has the weakest historical record when it comes to LGBT-inclusive films. For the first time since beginning this report, GLAAD did not find any LGBT-inclusive content among Disney’s yearly slate of films.”

Frozen 2 is expected to hit theaters before 2018, though no release date has been confirmed at this time. As we mentioned, with the movie already well into production, it would be incredibly hard to incorporate a new character into the story with pre-production already solidified. Perhaps Elsa can get a girlfriend in Frozen 3. Though, that will be a long way off into the future, and probably won’t happen until the next decade.
