Here's Why Stacey Dash's Oscar Appearance Was So Painfully Awkward

Oscar 2016 has come and gone, and though the interesting moments may soon be forgotten (Leo finally winning, Spotlight a surprise Best Picture winner, Gaga on stage with her giant ego and lots of rape victims), questions of diversity and racism remain.

Chris Rock set the tone with some zingers, including a brilliant bit comparing the protests of today with the fact that in the ‘60s there were also several years without racially diverse nominees, but people were “ too busy being raped and lynched to care about who won best cinematographer.”

The truly oddest moment (aka Oscars So Wha?????) came when he brought Stacey Dash on stage as Oscar’s new director of minority outreach. Dash, the Clueless (in more ways than one) co-star has become better known as a Fox News Commentator and one of the very few African-American conservatives who get trotted out on news programs to espouse idiotic things like that there’s no need for Black History Month.

She had chalked up the pre-show controversy as a lot of bunk, calling the boycott “ludicrous,” but appeared on stage to say “I cannot wait to help my people out. Happy Black History Month. Thank you.”

The audience both in the theater and at home had no idea how to take this “joke,” which was either a brilliant bit of performance art worthy of Andy Kaufman or Salvador Dali or just plain crazy.

Chrissy Teigen took a brief break from looking hot and having sex with John Legend to offer this look which may end up being the singularly most memorable image from the entire evening.

Yep, it’s great once. It’s even better lots and lots of times.

If we look closer to an image from almost the exact same second, we can get a bit more insight into what was happening in the room. Note that Liev Schreiber is doing something weird with his hand on his mouth as if holding back a scream, and that Saoirise Ronan is laughing with her mother, possibly because the only racially diverse issue they deal with in Ireland has to do with leprechaun rights. Personally, we are also partial to Olivia Munn in the right corner, because she looks like she just smelled a giant fart.

Let’s wrap with something that actually is at least a bit inspiring – Leonardo DiCaprio’s acceptance speech, especially the part at the end where he implores us to think about global warming. “Climate change is real, and it’s happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating. We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters or the big corporations, but who speak for all of humanity, for the indigenous people of the world…and for those people out there whose voices have been drowned out by the politics of greed.”
