A photo of tearful West Point graduate Alix Idrache has garnered national attention. The Haitian-born soldier, who was named second lieutenant, is pictured with tears running down his face as he holds his white hat in his hands. They are tears of joy.
Idrache explained the emotion behind the photo, saying in part, “Never did I imagine that such an honor would one day be bestowed on me.
“Men and women who have preserved the very essence of the human condition stood in that position and took the same oath.
“Shortly after leave, I will report to Ft. Rucker to start flight school. Knowing that one day I will be a pilot is humbling beyond words.”
The photo has received thousands of likes and shares on social media. One person commented on Instagram: “You make America proud to call you one of our sons!”
Another added on Facebook: “Inspirational. Every child should be required to visit West Point and the Naval Academy. That is what America is all about. Patriots and commitment. Makes you proud to be an American.”
Idrache emigrated to the United States from Port-au-Prince in 2009 after his father moved there to start a better life for their family.
