Touching Moment Police Officer Comforts Abandoned Toddler

A Georgia police officer who found a toddler wandering the streets alone took it upon himself to comfort the child and a picture of the touching moment has gone viral. Officer James Hurst, a rookie with the Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Police, can be seen holding the toddler in his arms to help calm him down.

A number of Savannah residents notified police that they had seen a toddler wandering the streets alone. Hurst – who has two small children of his own, one of whom has Down Syndrome – was immediately dispatched to the troubled Cuyler-Brownsville neighborhood.

“The boy, obviously, being so small, became very upset. He was crying. He was sobbing. I asked the hospital staff if I can hold him to comfort him and soothe him a little bit to try to calm him down,” Hurst told WSAV-TV

Thousands of Facebook users expressed their admiration for Hurst’s actions. “The world needs more people like this officer,” one user said.

To Hurst, it’s all part of the job. “It’s what we do, every single day, not just me, but the 600 officers that are on this department,” he said.

The child has been confirmed safe and was given a clean bill of health. He has been placed in the custody of the Georgia Department of Family & Children’s Services. To date, no arrests have been made in the case.
