'Trainspotting 2' Begins Shooting This May in Scotland

Back in September, Trainspotting director Danny Boyle confirmed that production will get under way on the long-awaited sequel Trainspotting 2 this summer. Then in December, it was confirmed that the entire original cast of Trainspotting will be back, with a 2017 release date being planned. The Official Humans of Edinburgh Facebook page recently spoke to Danny Boyle, who confirmed that filming will take place in Edinburgh, Scotland, where the original movie shot, with pre-production already under way.

“We’re up in Scotland filming Trainspotting 2 just now. I think what I love most about what I do is the variety, and being able to do something new every day. I get to meet such amazing people all the time. I think everyone’s fear is doing something a robot can do, and getting stuck doing something repetitive. I feel very fortunate and grateful to be able to make films, and to be able to always have a choice in what I do. Coming back to Edinburgh has actually been really fascinating, since filming the first Trainspotting Edinburgh has changed dramatically. You can see the gentrification massively in the city.”

The interviewer later clarified in the Facebook page’s comments section that the director is actually “making/researching” the movie in Edinburgh now, with principal photography set to begin in May. An official title hasn’t been given yet, but it has already been confirmed that they won’t use the same title as Irvine Welsh‘s 2002 novel sequel, Porno. Regardless of the title, the story will still be adapted from this follow-up novel, following the four main characters as they become involved in the porn industry.

Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, Ewen Bremner and Robert Carlyle will reprise the iconic roles of Renton, Sick Boy, Spud and Begbie in the sequel. Danny Boyle is directing from an adapted script by original Trainspotting screenwriter John Hodge. Andrew Macdonald, Danny Boyle, Christian Colson and Bernard Bellew are producing through their Figment Films, Decibel Films, and Cloud Eight Films companies.

Scheduling has been an issue for this follow-up in the past, since Jonny Lee Miller stars in the CBS drama Elementary and Robert Carlyle stars on ABC’s fantasy adventure series Once Upon a Time. With shooting scheduled to start this summer, that means Danny Boyle will be taking advantage of both stars’ summer hiatus’ from their respective shows. Are you excited that Trainspotting 2 will finally start filming in just a few short months?

Trainspotting 2 comes to theaters in 2017.
