Why Didn't Hulk Get a 'Captain America: Civil War' Post-Credit Scene?

Even though Marvel and Disney have screened Captain America: Civil War to select media, and a capacity crowd at CinemaCon this past week, no one is ruining the surprise of the post-credit sequences included with the movie. And it’s believed that some are even being held back until the movie is released in theaters this May. But there is one key Marvel character who failed to make the cut. Sorry, folks. While he was being considered for his own 90 second scene, The Incredible Hulk will not be showing up at any point during the Captain America: Civil War credits.

Though, it wasn’t for a lack of trying. Writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely wanted to include Bruce Banner in the movie somehow. And throughout production, we often heard that Mark Ruffalo would be showing up on screen, even though he was never confirmed by Marvel nor Disney to be part of this particular cast. Both Thor and Hulk are sitting this adventure out, as they will pair up for a Galactic Road Trip comedy in Thor: Ragnarok. That didn’t stop Robert Downey Jr. from telling Mark Ruffalo he’d be in the movie, which the actor believed was true. And it almost was.

Hulk was always intended to be a part of the Captain America: Civil War Post-Credit sequence, which the Russo Brothers tease arrives in three parts. But none of that footage was ever shot. Speaking with The Huffington Post, the writers set the record straight on what exactly happened to their Hulk cameo. They simply didn’t feel it should be tacked onto the end of the movie as an ‘afterthought’. Christopher Markus explains.

“Mark Ruffalo shot no scenes. We talked about having Bruce Banner at the very end of the film, and it just, again, seemed like we’re sticking people in just to stick them in. He has clearly gone somewhere at the end of ‘Ultron,’ and that’s a story. Don’t blow it off and put it in a little tiny chunk just to put in a little extra filigree on our movie. That’s a story.”

There were rumors that actor Mark Ruffalo, who was first introduced as Bruce Banner in 2012’s Avengers and resurfaced in 2014’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, was spotted on the set of Civil War last year. But those rumors turned out to be false. The production’s unit publicist John M. Pisani, who looks a lot like the actor, was mistaken for Mark Ruffalo. If someone spotted Pisani at night, or far from the set, it would be easy to confuse the two individuals.

Hulk was last seen in Age of Ultron, flying away from his team of superheros in a Quinjet, setting off for destinations unknown. He no longer wanted to put his peers in danger, or threaten the lives of other innocents. Where he is heading, we don’t know. That will be answered in Thor: Ragnarok. Nick Fury later teased that the jet was found crashed near Fiji. It is believed that Thor 3 will find Thor banished from Asgard and forced to battle gladiators on a distant planet, with the story pulling some of its arc from Planet Hulk, which has long been teased as its own Marvel Movie.
